KUALA LUMPUR: PKR Youth Chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad played down rumours of his name being touted as one of the possible candidates to fill the Youth and Sports ministerial position.
“I’m not fit or in a position to say whether I’m a suitable person for it. It is the prerogative of the prime minister (Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad), who has to discuss with party president (Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail), in accordance with the Federal Constitution.
“As for me, as I set my own target to contest (and win) in Setiawangsa parliamentary constituency. At the national level, Pakatan Harapan succeeded and became the ruling government.
“On who will be the suitable candidate for the post, I would say that we have an interesting problem as we have a lot of capable leaders.
“I am confident that whoever is chosen will carry out the duties diligently and deliver promises made to the people, or specifically the youth, who voted for us.
“For now, I want to focus on serving my constituents. I am looking at issues at both macro (national) and micro (constituency) level including the cost of living and housing problems,” he said in an interview today.
Nik Nazmi, 36, along with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) Youth Chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman, 25, were among the names proposed as the Youth and Sports Minister.
Bangi member of parliament Ong Kian Ming took to twitter on his suggestion, citing Nik Nazmi’s vast experience in the Selangor state government as assemblyman (Seri Setia) and state assembly deputy speaker before moving to contest for Setiawangsa parliamentary seat in the 14th General Election (GE14).
