Angkatan Muda KEADILAN (AMK) finds the move by the government of Malaysia to further strengthen the Sedition Act with the recent amendments akin to betraying the trust of the people who was promised a reformed government and system of governance.
In 2012, the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, promised Malaysia for a repeal of the Sedition Act. Instead of holding on to his promise, we are now seeing the Act being abused profusely with more than 160 people investigated and unnecessarily remanded under the draconian law by the police force.
To add to the nation’s woes, this Colonial-era Act that targets its own citizen is now being fortified by the government with amendments that will allow the government to further act indiscriminately to deny its citizen their inherent rights and liberties as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.
AMK strongly condemns the amendments to the Sedition Act and call upon the Prime Minister and the Barisan Nasional government to make good of its promise to repeal the Act instead of encouraging greater oppression on the people of Malaysia.
