I would like to reiterate my support for the Save Kuala Lumpur (SKL) movement which had just handed a memorandum to Prime Minister Najib Razak’s representative urging the gazetting of the Kuala Lumpur 2020 Local Plan.
SKL’s belief—which I share—is that the Plan, which was drafted in 2012 at the cost of RM30 million but the gazetting of which was shelved by the Federal Territories Ministry last year—can ensure more sustainable development in the city, including protecting its green lungs and public spaces.
The lack of such a plan has arguably allowed highly-contentious developments to go ahead, including the controversies in Taman Rimba Kiara in Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Taman Tiara Titiwangsa.
The Federal Government, the Federal Territories Ministry and the City Hall should heed the voice of the voters of Kuala Lumpur and gazette the Plan.
Voters in Kuala Lumpur in the upcoming General Elections should certainly only support candidates who are willing to back the Plan being gazetted.
Pakatan Harapan MPs have met with the SKL movement to convey their support. How about the two UMNO-Barisan Nasional MPs in Titiwangsa and Setiawangsa?
The people of our great city certainly deserve better.
