The criticisms of DBKL by the Selamatkan KL resident’s group highlights that local government in Malaysia needs radical reform.
Selamatkan KL has recently alleged that the DBKL is approving development projects illegally, including altering development plans without going through the proper legal process and failing to approve the city’s local plan.
Selamatkan KL is also reportedly considering legal against DBKL if it ignores the former’s call to gazette the KL City Plan 2020. The Federal Territory Pakatan Harapan Convention made the same demands last year.
There have been countless reports of Kuala Lumpur residents facing the negative effects of unsustainable development, including increased traffic congestion and shrinking green space.
The DBKL should certainly heed the Selamatkan KL’s call for more transparency in city planning and as well as to gazette the abovementioned document. It cannot expect the people of KL to wait for the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2050 that it is apparently focusing on.
